THE IMPASSIBLE WALL

INTRODUCTION

When God created Adam & Eve and placed them in the perfect environment of the Garden of Eden, they had wonderful fellowship together. However, God does not create robots, so He gave them a free-will, or decider, so they could choose whether or not they would be obedient to Him.

One day their decider went negative, and they disobeyed God's command that they were not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Several things happened immediately! They died spiritually, which meant they were unable to have fellowship with God, they received a Sin Nature, and they were driven from the Garden of Eden.

God cannot have fellowship with sinful man, so He set up a wall between Himself and mankind. Man could neither climb over that wall nor tear it down, but God removed it, boulder by boulder, when His Son, Jesus Christ paid the penalty for sin when He died on the cross more than two thousand years ago.

Don't be frightened away because some of the words we will be using in our lessons are difficult! You need to learn new words in order to build a vocabulary so you will be able to think more clearly! You can't do that if you are content to just use simple phrases and words that you hear every day.

The Bible calls the removal of the Impassible Wall, RECONCILIATION. In 2 Corinthians 5:18-20, God explains that when we become Christians by believing in Jesus Christ as our Savior, we become AMBASSADORS FOR JESUS CHRIST. That means the Christian represents Jesus Christ to people with whom he comes into contact in his daily life.

At the moment of physical birth, Adam's sin nature is given to each one of us. The only exception is Jesus Christ in true humanity, because He had no human father. God, the Holy Spirit was His father.

The Old Sin Nature is passed down to us through Adam, because he deliberately sinned. Oh yes, Eve also sinned, but she was deceived by Satan when he told her that she would be as smart as God if she ate of the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden.

Nothing that comes from our Old Sin Nature is pleasing or acceptable to God. He certainly is never pleased with our sins, but neither does he accept the human good which also comes from the same source.

We will see all of these truths explained from the scriptures as we study the lessons in this series, so LET'S GET STARTED.

LESSON 1

Before we begin our study of the Impassible Wall, let's name our known sins to the Lord so that we may learn the things He has for us to understand.

The principal for naming or admitting known sins is found in I John 1:9 as follows: "IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST TO FORGIVE US OUR SINS, AND TO CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

If you have personally believed in Jesus Christ, you are a Christian. As a Christian, you are also an AMBASSADOR FOR JESUS CHRIST.

To help us understand what it means to be an ambassador, let's compare the Christian as an ambassador to one who is appointed by the United States of America to represent our government to another country. Certain things are provided for the ambassador, and he is expected to abide by orders given to him at the time of his appointment.

1. An ambassador does not appoint himself.

a. A believer is appointed by the Lord

2. An ambassador does not support himself.

a. God provides all of the ambassador's needs. (Philippians 4:19)

3. An ambassador does not belong to the country where he is sent.

a. The believer is not of this world, but his home is heaven.

4. An ambassador has written instructions.

a. The believer has the Word of God in writing

5. If an ambassador is recalled, it is because war has been declared between the two nations.

a. When believers in the Church Age are taken up into heaven at the "rapture" (resurrection) of the Church, hostility will begin on earth, and that will be the beginning of the Tribulation period on the earth.

6. An ambassador doesn't take an insult as personal. God takes care of His Word and His Name when they are spoken against. We are not here to defend God's Word, only to declare it! God the Holy Spirit takes care of those details.

7. The ambassador does not enter a foreign country for his own personal interests or advantage. Instead, he represents the country that sent him as an ambassador.

a. As believers and ambassadors for Jesus Christ, we are to honor Him. We must be ready to speak, and then the Lord will provide the listeners. (1 Peter 3:15)

b. We must study God's word so that we will be ready at all times to answer those who ask why we can be so sure we have eternal life.

(John 10:28) "I GIVE UNTO THEM ETERNAL LIFE, AND THEY SHALL NEVER

PERISH: NEITHER SHALL ANY MAN PLUCK THEM OUT OF MY HAND."

There is no higher calling than to have the privilege of being an ambassador for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our message to unbelievers is to tell them that sin is not an issue between God and man, because all sin was paid for and judged when Jesus Christ died on the cross.

LESSON 2

The problem of man's SIN was the first huge boulder in the Impassible Wall. First of all, let's ask the question, "WHAT IS SIN?" Sin is anything that man thinks or does which is contrary to the revealed will of God.

At the very moment we are born into the world, we receive a SIN NATURE, because we are the descendants of Adam, who was the first sinner in the human race.

Romans 5:12 tells us that when Adam disobeyed God, his human spirit died, and he received a Sin Nature. That Sin Nature is passed down to every member of the human race with the exception of Jesus Christ who had no human father. Because He was sinless, Jesus Christ was qualified to bear the sins of the world in His own body on the cross and pay the penalty for those sins.

When a person believes that Jesus paid for his sins, he is forgiven and receives a human spirit with which he may have fellowship with God.

Every person who reaches God-consciousness must make a decision about the God of the universe. If that individual wants to know God, at some time during his/her lifetime, God will make the Gospel clear.

At the moment of hearing the Gospel, another decision must be made, which is, will that person accept the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, or will he reject it and be content with his own good deeds that come from his Old Sin Nature.

Before the Bible was complete, God spoke to man by way of dreams, visions and direct conversation with certain individuals. They learned many things by illustrations with which they were familiar, just as we learn when we are little children.

After the Children of Israel were delivered from slavery in Egypt, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. They had Moses as their leader, and the Lord provided all of their needs. Their shoes and clothing did not wear out during that time. The Lord also provided water for them and fed them with angel's food, which was Manna.

Instead of being thankful for the Lord's provision for them, the people complained constantly to Moses. Finally, in the 40th year of wandering, they said to Moses, "Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no water or bread here, and we hate this Manna!"

The Lord was ready to destroy every one of them, and He sent poisonous snakes among the people. Many were dying as a result of the poisonous bites, so some of the Israelites came to Moses and said, "We have sinned! We have spoken against the Lord and against you! Pray now for us unto the Lord and ask Him to remove these serpents from us!"

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Make a serpent of brass, and set it on a pole where all the people can see it. If someone who has been bitten looks at the brass serpent, he will live!"

Moses obeyed the Lord, and he fashioned a serpent out of brass and put it on a pole. He commanded the people to look at it and live. Those who listened to Moses, were spared from a horrible death, but those who refused to look died.

Many hundreds of years later, Jesus used this illustration to show a very religious Pharisee by the name of Nicodemus how he could have eternal life.

As a Pharisee, Nicodemus knew the Old Testament scriptures very well. He prayed in the temple seven times a day, and he performed many good deeds for the Jews. He was a religious man, but he was not eternally saved.

How Jesus presented the way of salvation to Nicodemus by using the illustration of the brass serpent incident is found in the gospel of John, chapter 3:1-14.

Nicodemus had been listening to Jesus and witnessing the miracles which He performed day after day. He had to find out more about Jesus, but he didn't want his Pharisee friends know how interested he really was, so Nicodemus went to talk with Jesus one night and said, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, because no ordinary man can do the miracles you perform unless God is with him.

Jesus answered, "Here's a point of Biblical teaching, Nicodemus: unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God!" Nicodemus looked intently at Jesus and questioned, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he go back into his mother's womb and be born all over again?"

Jesus answered, "Listen closely, Nicodemus. Unless a man is born of the Word of God and by means of the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God! Don't be so amazed at what I'm telling you. The natural man is not able to understand spiritual things! He must have a human spirit in order to have fellowship with God. Just as the wind blows where it will, and you hear the sound of it, but can't tell from where it came or where it's going, so is everyone who is born of the Holy Spirit."

Nicodemus sighed and looked more puzzled than before. Then he said, "How can these things be?"

Jesus answered, "You are a teacher in Israel and you don't understand my words? If I tell you about earthly things and you don't believe me, how shall I tell you about spiritual or heavenly things so you will understand?"

While Nicodemus sat there stunned and not knowing how to answer that question, Jesus gave him an illustration which he could understand. Jesus said, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up. Whoever will believe in Him will not perish but have eternal life.”

Suddenly, Nicodemus understood what Jesus was saying. He knew the teachings of Isaiah and the other prophets concerning the promise of a Messiah who would come into the world and that He would die for the sins of the world. Nicodemus knew that Jesus was that Messiah, and he believed in Him.

Jesus went on to say, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life."

LESSON 3

Most of us can understand why we are not acceptable to God, but we may have trouble understanding why God can't accept our good works.

Both sins and human good come from our Old Sin Nature. There are 3 kinds of people in the world. They are good, bad and religious. Let's take a look at them:

1. The man people consider to be "good", may live a moral, upright life. He may give money to those in need and be very helpful to his friends and family. This man thinks God must be pleased with him because he is so nice.

2. The man whom society calls "bad" usually knows he is bad and he enjoys being that way. He knows that God is not happy with his actions.

3. The "religious" man may spend his entire life in what he considers to be service to the Lord, but if he has not believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, he does not have Eternal Life.

Let's examine these three types more closely:

The first man to commit an evil act was Cain. (Genesis 4:8) He murdered his brother Abel because he was jealous of him, and he was also very angry with God. This man can certainly be classified as a BAD MAN.

When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they tried to cover themselves with fig leaves. God could not accept that, so He covered them with the skin of an animal. God did that to teach Adam and Eve that an innocent substitute would have to die for them, and that was the first declaration of the Gospel to the human race.

Adam and Eve taught their children that only a blood sacrifice would be acceptable to the Lord. When the boys grew up, Abel was a shepherd and Cain was a farmer. The time came for them to make a sacrifice unto the Lord, so Abel brought a lamb from his flocks and offered it on an altar to the Lord. The Lord was pleased with Abel's offering.

Then Cain brought some of the beautiful produce he had grown in his fields and offered it, but the Lord did not accept Cain's offering, because it was not a blood sacrifice.

Cain was so angry that he killed Abel and buried his body. Then the Lord asked Cain, "Where is Abel, thy brother?"

Cain knew very well what he had done, but he answered the Lord and said, "I know not! Am I my brother's keeper?"

Cain received severe punishment for his actions, but we have no record of him ever admitting his sin to God.

Next, let's look at a GOOD man. In Mark 10:17-22, we see a man whom most people would call good.

Jesus was teaching the people on the streets in Judea when suddenly a rich young man ran to Him and fell at His feet saying, "Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

Jesus replied, "Why do you call Me good? There is none good but God." Then Jesus quoted the last six commandments which apply to attitude and actions toward people, but He omitted the first four which apply to God as He said to the young man, "You know the commandments!"

The young man answered, "All these I have observed from my youth!"

Then Jesus told the man to take his eyes off his riches and follow Him. The young man went away sadly, because he had great possessions which meant everything to him.

The third type of man we want to examine is the RELIGIOUS man. Our subject will be the apostle Paul. Before he became a Christian, Paul was a very religious man, and he thought he was doing great things for God when he killed Christians. In I Timothy 1:15 Paul tells us that he is the worst sinner whoever lived because of his religious zeal. He continually persecuted Christians until Jesus Christ personally appeared to him on the road to Damascus and accused him of the wrong he was doing. Paul believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and received eternal life.

Before any of these three kinds of people can have eternal life, they must understand that any good things they might do cannot compare with THE GOOD WORK of God, which is, Jesus Christ dying on the cross for their sins.

David tells us in Psalm 14: 2 & 3: "The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men to see if there were any that did understand and seek God. They are ALL gone aside. They are all together become filthy! There is none that doeth good! No, not one'"

When a person believes in Jesus Christ, he is eternally saved from condemnation. He is given ETERNAL LIFE. Then God credits HIS VERY OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS (goodness) to that believer who has no unconfessed sin in his life.

LESSON 4

Hebrews 9:27 tells us, “AND IT IS APPOINTED UNTO MAN ONCE TO DIE, AND AFTER THAT THE JUDGMENT.”

No matter if a person is GOOD, BAD, or RELIGIOUS and dies without having believed in Jesus Christ, he will stand before Him at the GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT in eternity. There will be no place for those unbelievers to hide.

Revelation 20:11: "And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heavens fled away; and there was found no place for them.”

Revelation 20:12 tells us the basis on which those unbelievers will be evaluated: "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the BOOK OF LIFE. The dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS!

The dead spoken about here are the spiritually dead. They were never born again by faith in Jesus Christ. Some of the people were great and powerful during their lifetime; but now they are in the same situation as those who lived a very insignificant life.

In His perfect RIGHTEOUSNESS, God provided salvation for those unbelievers, but they would not believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Now we see His perfect JUSTICE in action as the books are opened.

God is absolute RIGHTEOUSNESS and JUSTICE, and He will show every unbeliever the place in the BOOK OF LIFE where their names had been recorded and then blotted out. He does that to prove to them that provision was made for them to be saved, and spend eternity with Him, but they refused to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Then the Lord will show the unbeliever that his name was entered into the BOOK OF WORKS, because he did not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, All of the unbeliever's good works will be recorded in that book. Notice that their sins are not mentioned at all, because Jesus Christ bore them on the cross and they have been judged!

Revelation 20:13,14: "And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them, and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death."

Every unbeliever will be given a body at this last judgment, and they will stand at that Great White Throne of judgment to be judged by the very One whom they rejected in their lifetime. They were spiritually dead all of their life, and now they will be cast into the Lake of Fire, which is the Second Death.

Revelation 20:15: "And whosoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the Lake of Fire."

Again, the Bible emphasizes that those whose names are not found in the Book of Life will be cast into the Lake of Fire after they are judged. In the Lake of Fire, they will never die, but they will spend eternity with Satan and his angels along with all other people who rejected Jesus Christ.

The Lake of Fire will be a place of continual torment and isolation from the Lord throughout all eternity.

When we see the reality of these verses, we ought to be more concerned than ever before that we are faithful Ambassadors for Christ in presenting the facts of the Gospel to the human race.

LESSON 5

Another boulder in the IMPASSIBLE WALL which had to be removed so that man could have fellowship with God was our human birth.

Man is born a sinner! Adam passed the sin nature down to every one of us! Romans 5:12: "Wherefore, by one man, the sin (sin nature) entered into the world and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for all have sinned". Spiritual death is meant here. When Adam sinned he died spiritually but he lived many more years on the earth before he died physically.

In the third chapter of the gospel of John, we see how Jesus told a very religious man that he needed to have a new birth in order to be acceptable to God.

Nicodemus was a religious leader. He was not only a theologian, but he was also a Pharisee who prayed seven times a day in the temple, and he probably had memorized much of the books of Moses and of the prophets of the Old Testament.

Nicodemus had been observing Jesus for awhile, and he had some questions to ask. He didn't want his friends to know of his visit to Jesus, so he came to Jesus at night, privately.

He said, "Teacher, we know that God must have sent you, because no one can do the miracles we've been witnessing here in Jerusalem unless God is with him."

Jesus replied by saying, "Nicodemus, here's a point of doctrine for you to think about. Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God! That which is flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

Nicodemus was shocked at Jesus' words, and he must have sat there with his mouth open in amazement.

Jesus noticed Nicodemus' surprise, so He continued and said, "Don't be so amazed when I tell you that you must be born again! The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear the sound of it, but you aren't able to tell from where it comes or where it is going. That's the way it is when a person is born spiritually."

In exasperation, Nicodemus questioned, "How can these things be?"

Jesus answered him, ""You are a theologian and a ruler of the Jews, and you don't understand my words? Here's another point of doctrine, Nicodemus: the Father and the Holy Spirit bear witness to the things I do, and you have not believed them. If I tell you about earthly things and you don't believe them, how can you understand and believe what I tell you about heavenly things?"

Nicodemus is still puzzled, but he considers His words. Then he hears something which he can understand.

Jesus said, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have Eternal Life. God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

Nicodemus understood that Moses was told to fashion a brass serpent and put it on a pole and hold it up where all of the people could see it. The people had committed sin that caused God to send poisonous snakes among them to bite them. Moses told the people to look and live, and when they who were bitten looked at the brass serpent, they understood that an innocent substitute had to die for their sins. Putting faith in God's Word kept them from dying!

We know that Nicodemus became a believer during this meeting with Jesus or somewhere between this session or after Jesus was crucified. Nicodemus and his friend Joseph of Arimathea went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus so they could give it a decent burial. No Pharisee would have broken the Law by touching a dead body.

When a person believes that Jesus Christ paid the penalty his sins, he is born again. God the Holy Spirit activates the human spirit, and that person can understand spiritual things and have fellowship with God.

LESSON 6

When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He took care of the problem of man's POSITION IN ADAM.

The Bible says we are all born IN ADAM, and because of that, we are dead to God. We are told in I Corinthians, "For as IN ADAM all die, even so IN CHRIST shall all be made alive"

When a person puts his faith in the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, the Holy Spirit does four things for him immediately:

1. REGENERATES: makes the person alive to God by activating his human spirit.

Ephesians 2:1, "And you has He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins."

2. INDWELLS: comes to live inside the Christian in order to teach him and also to produce the character of Christ in the believer who is in fellowship with the Lord.

Colossians 1:27, "Christ in you, the hope of glory"

3. BAPTIZES: identifies the believer with Jesus Christ

Romans 6:3,4, "Know ye not that so many of us that were baptized into Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore, we are buried with Him by baptism into death, so just as He was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life."

In those verses, the Apostle Paul says to the Christian, "Don't you understand that you are now identified with Christ and you have died to the sin nature? You are now able to walk in a way which is pleasing to God."

As Christians we are in two places at once! As far as God is concerned, we are already in heaven, but we are still in a physical body on this earth. Now we must make a choice to be under the control of our Old Sin Nature or to be in fellowship with the Lord by confessing our known sins to Him. When we do that we are teachable, and we no longer have to be under the control of our Old Sin Nature.

4. SEALS: the moment we are born-again, we belong to God forever!

I John 5:11-13 makes this very clear: "And this is the record, that God has given to us Eternal Life, and this life is in His Son. He that has the Son of God has life, and he that has not the Son of God has not life. These things have I written unto you who believer in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have Eternal Life."

We must understand what the Holy Spirit has done for us so we may have confidence to live our lives to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ!
